From Morgan: Research

Time to do some research!  Monica and I decided that we had to find other ways to educate ourselves on past fashion trends.  There is only so much we can get from the internet, so a trip to the bookstore was the perfect idea.  Deep within the fashion section at Barnes and Noble I spotted these gems.

Fifty Fashion Looks that Changed the 1950's, 60's, and 70's.
They are perfect! Each book mentions key fashion trends and the people who started them.  We decided to start with the 1950's and work our way from there.
Here are a couple trends that caught my eye:

Beatnik Style 1956: The pen is mightier than the sword

This style was very popular with young people who rebelled against the establishment and their parents.  This group of people have been know to be the start of the hippie movement.   They needed a uniform to set themselves apart form the rest of society.  They did this by wearing all black from head to toe, sporting french haircuts, and no high heels.  When I think of beatnik style, a scene of a coffee shop or jazz club pops in my head.  I also hear people citing poetry and lots of snapping.
This rebellious style is still popular today. Beyonce displays this trend in one of her new music videos.  Spot the similarities?

Rockabilly 1956: Postwar punk rockers

This style joins together the music of rock 'n' roll and hillbilly/country.  Most of us know the spin off of this style known as the greaser.  Men wore leather jackets, plane t-shirts, and rolled up blue jeans.  They styled their hair in a greased pompadours, similar to Elvis Presley who got the idea from southern truckers!  Many celebrities today have adopted this look,

Rockabilly Women:

Rockabilly fashion for women was a scooped neck blouse, petticoats with wide hooped skirts, tight sweaters, and a scarf knotted around their neck.
You can see Gwen Stefani and Katy Perry have gotten a lot of inspiration from the rockabilly scene.

This book is filled with very useful information. Monica and I can use it to make sure we are stocking Peach Betty with authentic items from each decade.  I can not wait to purchase the other two books.  I will be back to let you know what I find in them very soon!

xoxo
